Theni Collector R. Vaithinathan on Saturday released water for irrigation and drinking purposes from Mullaperiyar dam at Thekkadi.Following a directive from the Tamil Nadu government, officials of the Water Resources Department said 350 cusecs of water was released from Mullaperiyar dam, with 200 cusecs allocated for agricultural purposes.The 200 cusecs of water was released for irrigation in ayacutdars of double crop region in Cumbum valley, and 150 cusecs for drinking water purposes, for the next 120 days depending on storage level. The water release would benefit 14,707 acres of land across Theni district.The Collector appealed to farmers to make judicious use of the water released from Mullaperiyar dam, adopt proper water management practices and focus on achieving higher yield.Theni MP Thanga Tamil Selvan, Andipatti MLA A.
