A coordination meeting with pharmacists and medical shop owners was chaired by the Superintendent of Police G.S. Anitha at the office of the Superintendent of Police here on Saturday (August 8, 2026). The meeting was convened to crackdown illegal sale and circulation of psychotropic drugs that are habit-forming, and to prevent drug abuse. Drugs shall be dispensed only against prescriptions by qualified registered medical practitioner, for schedule H, H1, and X-controlled drugs. A proper inventory of the drugs in stock and sales must be maintained in compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.The medical shops were instructed to be vigilant against any suspicious procurement of large quantum of drugs by an individual. Such purchases must immediately be alerted to the police and the Health Department.All medical shops must have CCTV cameras installed and the shop owners must ensure that the cameras are functioning and their recordings preserved.Any suspicious purchase of drugs using potentially spurious prescription must be vetted and awareness raised. Further, no medicines shall be disposed off without prescriptions. The NDPS Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act and a host of other drug related legislations must be adequately followed and adhered. All expired drugs must be duly disposed off and ensured that these drugs are not diverted for other use. Further, any batch of missing drugs must be reported to the police, pharmacy managements were told.Any information on the use and circulation of narcotic drugs, or controlled drugs shall be immediately shared to the police on the emergency number 100, Ms. Anitha has stated.
