German security services are investigating a series of suspicious drone flights over a highly secure military base in North Rhine-Westphalia. It houses a massive, high-security underground warehouse – situated 130 meters (426 feet) deep and covering 30,000 square meters (322,917 square feet) – where equipment and spare parts are stored. The base also serves as Europe’s only “Patriot shipyard,” a specialized facility where military technicians maintain and repair the US-made Patriot air defense systems currently in high demand in Ukraine. Overnight surveillance operation According to reports from German broadcasters WDR and NDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, security personnel guarding the Mechernich base recorded six separate drone flights over the facility between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 7. Local police from the Euskirchen district were called to the scene and personally witnessed at least one of the drones, noting that it briefly circled directly over the emergency responders. German military police also observed the flights. According to a confidential police report, military investigators suspect the unmanned aerial vehicles were Chinese-made Foxtech Fly-380 VTOL models.
