Cristian “Cuti” Romero wants out of North London, and two of Spain’s biggest clubs are happy to oblige. The Tottenham Hotspur captain has become the focal point of a La Liga transfer tug-of-war between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona heading into the final weeks of the summer 2026 window.
Atlético appears to be in the driver’s seat. The Madrid club has reportedly reached a personal agreement with Romero and is preparing a second bid after Tottenham rejected an initial offer of €30 million. Barcelona, meanwhile, is playing the role of interested bystander, monitoring developments without having submitted a formal offer of their own.
Atlético’s head start and Tottenham’s price tag
Atlético Madrid’s pursuit of Romero has been the more concrete of the two. The club opened with a €30 million bid that Tottenham promptly turned down. Reports indicate they’re preparing an improved offer, with speculation pointing toward the €40 million range. Given that Romero’s contract runs through 2029, an extension he signed just last year, Tottenham has significant leverage and no pressure to sell at a discount.
Romero himself has made his preferences known. The 28-year-old has expressed a clear desire to move to La Liga. That preference effectively ended talks with Inter Milan earlier in August, where a verbal agreement of around €40 million reportedly fell apart when Inter couldn’t complete the player sales necessary to fund the deal.
