Ukrainian attack drones struck two major Russian oil refineries early Saturday morning, Aug. 8, sparking large fires at the Syzran and Ilsky facilities as part of an overnight barrage across multiple Russian regions. In the Samara region, a massive blaze engulfed the Syzran Oil Refinery. Samara region Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev acknowledged a drone attack on “one of the industrial enterprises” in the region but declined to name the facility or detail the extent of the damage, stating only that efforts to mitigate the aftermath were underway. Independent OSINT analysis by Astra subsequently confirmed the fire at the Syzran refinery. The Syzran plant, a key asset of the Rosneft group, is a major facility with an annual processing capacity of 8.9 million tons of oil. The refinery has been targeted in previous drone attacks.
Simultaneously, drones struck the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the southern Krasnodar region. The regional operational headquarters claimed the resulting fire was caused by falling drone debris. Authorities reported that five people were injured in the incident and are receiving medical assistance. The Ilsky refinery is a significant regional supplier with a processing capacity of 6.6 million tons of crude oil per year.
