Liverpool has reached a verbal agreement to sign FC Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo on loan, according to reports circulating on social media that cite approval from Barcelona sporting director Deco. The deal, if finalized, would give Liverpool one of La Liga’s most physically imposing defenders and hand Barcelona some breathing room on a wage bill that has been the subject of creative accounting for years.
Araujo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan international, has been a mainstay of Barcelona’s back line since arriving from Boston River in 2020. His contract at Camp Nou runs through June 2031.
Why Barcelona would let Araujo leave
Araujo’s release clause was initially set at €1 billion, a figure designed less as a realistic price tag and more as a “do not touch” sign. That clause has been reduced over time, though the exact current figure remains unclear. Previous transfer windows saw Liverpool reportedly table bids in the €30-60 million range, none of which proved sufficient to pry him loose on a permanent basis.
Araujo recently returned to full training with Barcelona after dealing with injury concerns, which adds another layer to the decision.
