The Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) has filed a new lawsuit against its former president, Randy Kanai, alleging he is evading a six-figure judgment for misappropriating funds from the youth sports organization by having fraudulently transferred ownership of a property to an investment entity he controls.
The allegations are a new chapter in a yearslong controversy that has previously been chronicled by Sportico and USA Today.
Kanai served as president of CAHA, the state’s USA Hockey affiliate, from 2012 to 2023, when he was voted out amid allegations that he diverted more than a half-million dollars of CAHA’s funds for his personal benefit.
In December, following a two-day trial, a Colorado judge found Kanai liable for civil theft, conversion, breach of fiduciary duty and unjust enrichment and ordered him to pay CAHA $606,812.23 in damages, pre-judgement interests and courtroom costs. Kanai has appealed the judgment.
CAHA filed its latest lawsuit on July 28 in Grand County (Colo.) District Court.
