The Stormers did enough on Friday evening to show the Springboks just how vulnerable the All Blacks are up front in the opening match of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry in Cape Town.
While the Cape side could not find a way to topple the visitors, their pack of forwards laid a solid marker in the scrums and with their rolling mauls to show the world champions that this series could be dominated up front.
New Zealand won 38-21, and yes, it was the first match of a very long tour, but they will know that plenty of water needs to run into the sea before they are ready for the Springboks.
They got off to a fast start, looking to sling the ball around to catch the Stormers unawares. It worked for a bit, and maybe the momentous occasion also got to the home players a bit because they appeared shell-shocked at the start.
