Malawi's government has denied charges of illegal mining at the Kangankunde Rare Earth project, stating official inspections revealed no evidence of unauthorized mineral extraction or illegal exports from the facility.
Speaking before Parliament, Malawi's Mining Minister, Thoko Tembo, stated that government investigations determined that operations at the Balaka-based project complied with current mining standards.
His statements were in reaction to concerns voiced by the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, Energy, and Climate Change, which had questioned blasting activities, ore stockpiling, and the removal of mineral samples from the site.
The Malawian minister noted that all goods transferred outside of the nation had gained the required clearances and were only exported for laboratory testing, technical assessment, and other approved scientific reasons.
According to the ministry, all actions followed Malawi's legislative framework for mining exploration and development, according to Nyasa Times.
