Malawi is attracting fresh international investment in its critical minerals sector after Australian-listed AuKing Mining agreed to acquire the Machinga Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) Project, underscoring the country’s growing role in the global scramble for minerals essential to electric vehicles, renewable energy and advanced defence technologies.

The acquisition gives AuKing full ownership of the 200-square-kilometre project in southern Malawi, located within the mineral-rich Chilwa Alkaline Province, one of Africa’s best-known rare earth districts.

The company plans to begin exploration immediately after the transaction receives regulatory approval from Malawi’s Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority.

While financial terms are structured around staged cash payments, shares and performance milestones worth up to A$4 million ($2.6 million), the strategic value lies in the project’s unusually high concentration of heavy rare earth elements such as dysprosium and terbium—metals that are increasingly sought after for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, offshore wind turbines, robotics and military equipment.

Unlike the more abundant light rare earths, heavy rare earths are scarcer and command greater strategic importance because of their use in high-performance technologies.
