A Russian serviceman is standing trial in person in Ukraine for the first time on charges of raping a Ukrainian woman while she was living under Russian occupation. The accused, Sergei Karpilovich, denies the allegations and claims he "fell in love" with the survivor.

Details: Russian forces began attempting to seize the village of Zolotyi Kolodiaz, near Dobropillia in Donetsk Oblast, in August 2025. Among the troops involved was 51-year-old Karpilovich from Russia's Sverdlovsk Oblast.

Before joining the Russian military, Karpilovich had spent around 30 years in prison for theft-related offences. He was released after signing a contract to serve in Russia's Armed Forces and was assigned to the 114th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade.
