Halfway through 2026, a structural divide has opened across asset classes. The S&P 500 has gained 5.7 percent year to date, while Bitcoin has fallen 32.2 percent and Ethereum has lost 46.4 percent. Gold and silver, after surging on geopolitical tensions early in the year, have given back those gains and sit at -7.5 percent and -19.4 percent, respectively.

For multi-asset allocators, the question is straightforward: why has the same macro environment produced a divergence this sharp? The answer requires separating two structural forces that arrived at the same time.
