Akasoba Duke-Abiola, Nigerian law professor and diplomat and widow of Moshood Abiola the Nigerian politician of the June 12 fame, has received a major boost in her bid for the office of United Nations Secretary-General after the African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC), formally endorsed her candidature for the global position.
The endorsement comes as the global process to identify a successor to António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31, 2026, is already underway.
The consortium’s position was conveyed in a nomination letter signed by Edward Agbai, its Deputy Executive Coordinator, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Agbai, the endorsement followed communication received through the Nigerian National Think Tank regarding Duke-Abiola’s nomination for consideration as Africa’s candidate for the UN’s highest administrative office.
The consortium described Duke-Abiola’s record in public service, diplomacy, academia and human rights advocacy as exemplary, expressing confidence that she possesses the qualities required to lead the world body at a critical period in global affairs.
