The dispute over Parliament’s R4.6 billion rebuild project continues, with the DA demanding answers while the oversight committee defends the appointment of the DBSA.
The cost to rebuild parliament has ballooned to R4,6 billion after initial cost of R2,1 billion, sparking calls for a full investigation into the project.
The DA accused Parliament of risking billions of rand in taxpayers’ money after the estimated cost of rebuilding the fire-damaged parliamentary precinct increased dramatically.
The party alleged that legal processes may have been bypassed when responsibility for the rebuild shifted from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure to Parliament.
However, the Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament has rejected the DA’s claims, insisting that the implementation arrangements were legally informed, transparent and developed through consultations between Parliament, the department and National Treasury.
