…Tinubu’s EFCC reversal raises more questions than answers – ADC
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday bowed to mounting public outrage over the freezing of an Osun State Government bank account, directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately reverse the restriction, in a dramatic intervention that underscored growing concerns over the credibility of next week’s governorship election in the state.
Tinubu, in a personally signed statement, said although the EFCC was constitutionally empowered to investigate financial crimes, the timing of the action, barely days before the August 15 governorship election, was “deeply embarrassing” and risked creating the impression that federal institutions were being used to influence the electoral process.
The President’s intervention followed widespread condemnation from opposition parties, senior lawyers, civil society and political leaders, who described the commission’s action as capable of undermining democracy and fuelling political tension in the state.
