The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s directive ordering the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to reverse the freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts, but said the President’s explanation of the decision has raised “far more troubling questions than it answers.”
In a statement on Thursday signed by Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, the opposition party questioned President Tinubu’s claim that the EFCC acted pursuant to a court order, insisting that the anti-graft agency never relied on such a claim while defending its action.
BusinessDay reports that the controversy began after the EFCC froze the Osun State Government’s account over allegations linked to local government funds, a development that triggered widespread criticism from opposition parties, civil society groups and legal experts, who described the action as politically motivated ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.
Following the public outcry, President Tinubu on Thursday directed the anti-graft agency to discontinue the action, saying it was necessary to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
But the ADC said the EFCC consistently maintained that it froze the accounts under its statutory powers and preventive mandate, without mentioning any judicial authorisation.
