Dantani maintained that although no individual or institution should be above the law, anti-corruption agencies must also avoid turning legitimate investigations into instruments of political persecution.
A human rights lawyer and advocate for the rule of law, Hamza N. Dantani, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of engaging in selective investigations, warning that the agency risks undermining the rule of law and constitutional democracy if it continues to exercise its powers in a manner perceived as politically motivated.
In a statement titled "Selective Investigation by the EFCC: A Threat to the Rule of Law and Constitutional Democracy," Dantani argued that while the EFCC was established to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes without fear or favour, its mandate can only be fulfilled through fairness, impartiality and strict adherence to due process.
"The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was established as one of Nigeria's foremost anti-corruption agencies with the noble mandate of investigating and prosecuting economic and financial crimes without fear or favour," he said.
According to him, "these lofty objectives can only be achieved when the Commission conducts its affairs with absolute impartiality, fairness, and strict adherence to the rule of law."
