Farmers in Coimbatore district have said that the revised Agricultural Budget presented on Thursday failed to address their requirements.The Thamizha Vivasaigal Sangham district president, G. Ranganathan, said in a press release that while there were some welcome measures, the Budget was silent on the suggestions given by the farmer associations. The focus is more on agri business rather than agriculture. There is no announcement on having an office in Coimbatore for certifying organic products and the announcement on solar pumps was inadequate, he said.The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association and the Indian Pump Manufacturers Association said the pump industry welcomed the initiatives related to irrigation, improving water-use efficiency and ensuring reliable energy support for agriculture.The continued commitment to free three-phase electricity for agricultural operations, supported by an allocation of ₹7,432.58 crore, will ensure reliable irrigation. The emphasis on creating additional irrigation sources through borewells, tube wells and farm ponds and bringing more rain-fed agricultural land under assured irrigation will benefit the farmers.“The industry particularly appreciates the government's strong focus on micro-irrigation and efficient utilisation of available water resources. The allocation of ₹785 crore to extend micro-irrigation to 2,22,794 acres, benefiting about 95,000 farmers, with 100% subsidy for small and marginal farmers and 75% for other farmers, is a significant initiative towards improving agricultural productivity and water conservation,” they said in a press release.For effective implementation of micro-irrigation, however, the pump is an integral part of the system, as drip and sprinkler irrigation require the necessary pressure and flow. The subsidy component should include appropriately selected energy-efficient pumpsets, said Mithun Ramda, president of SIEMA and K.V. Karthik, the IPMA president.
