A 57-year-old British tourist drowned on Thursday morning while swimming in the Keri area of the popular Ionian island of Zakynthos, western Greece.
According to state-run broadcaster ERT, the Briton was a passenger on a day cruise vessel that toured the island and had stopped in an area surrounded by steep rocks.
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was transported by private speedboat to Limni and from there by ambulance to the Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Zakynthos’ Port Authority said.
A post-mortem is expected to shed light on the exact cause of death.
The port authority has opened a preliminary investigation into the incident.
