River Plate has struck a verbal agreement with Atletico Madrid to bring Thiago Almada back to Argentine football, with a reported fee of €20 million for 50% of the player’s registration rights.
The deal structure and what it signals
Almada, a 25-year-old attacking midfielder who was part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, has reportedly agreed to personal terms with River Plate. The transfer is expected to be formally announced after the 2026 World Cup wraps up, with final formalities still being worked through.
Earlier in May 2026, Atletico Madrid was reportedly seeking around €17 million for half of Almada’s rights. The final agreed figure of €20 million suggests River Plate was willing to pay a premium to fend off competition, most notably from Brazilian club Flamengo, which had also expressed interest in the player.
Almada originally joined Atletico Madrid in July 2025 after a stint at Botafogo and a loan spell at Lyon.
