Sweden’s Supreme Court has authorized the transfer of a seized Russian-linked cargo vessel to Ukraine, marking the first time a foreign court has greenlit handing over a shadow fleet ship to Kyiv. The ruling, issued on August 5, 2026, upheld lower court decisions that permitted the seizure of the Caffa, a Guinea-flagged vessel intercepted in Swedish waters on March 6.
The Caffa was boarded by Swedish authorities on suspicion of transporting stolen Ukrainian grain from Crimea. Shadow fleet vessels operate under false flags, with minimal insurance and deliberately opaque ownership chains.
