Former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis has joined former coach Stephen Fleming in the Joburg Super Kings exit room.

Faf du Plessis’s illustrious career in South African cricket may come to a close after the former Proteas captain was left off the Joburg Super Kings’ retained player list for Betway SA20 Season 5.

Du Plessis, 42, has led the Super Kings for the first four SA20 seasons, where they’ve progressed to the playoffs each season but failed to reach a final. Along with the Paarl Royals, they remain the only team yet to feature in a final.

The veteran failed to complete Season 4 after suffering a severe right thumb ligament tear requiring surgery while fielding for JSK in a group match against MI Cape Town.

He remains JSK’s leading all-time run-scorer with 1,029 runs at an average of 32.15 and a strike rate of 143.91, including the competition’s first-ever century.
