Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) is facing renewed questions over safety controls at its Rustenburg operations following a sulphur dioxide gas leak at its Mineral Processing Plant that claimed the life of an employee.
According to trade union AMCU, the gas leak was caused by a valve failure at the sulphuric acid plant, which led to the release of toxic gas.
Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) is a toxic gas that can cause serious breathing problems and, in severe cases, death. It is produced during industrial processes and requires strict safety controls to protect workers from exposure.
The union said eight employees were exposed, with a 45-year-old plant cleaner dying after collapsing near the site’s clinic. Seven other employees received medical treatment.
