Impala Platinum has halted mining at its Rustenburg operations until July 28 to conduct a safety reset following a series of recent safety incidents.
The company paused operations after two employees died on 23 and July, saying the shutdown would allow it to review critical safety controls, engage employees and reinforce operational discipline.
The mining giant said that this "decision reflects the Group's commitment to placing the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees above all other considerations".
Impala Rustenburg employs about 51 500 people across its mining and processing operations and is expected to produce between 1.67 million and 1.76 million 6E ounces in the 2026 financial year.
