Veteran actor Usha Nadkarni has entertained audiences for nearly seven decades, becoming a familiar face across Marathi and Hindi films, television and theatre. While millions remember her for unforgettable performances, especially in Pavitra Rishta, her journey to success has been anything but easy. From growing up in an abusive household to living alone for decades and making painful sacrifices for her career, Usha has spoken openly over the years about the struggles that shaped her life. Even at 80, she continues to work with the same passion that first drew her to acting as a child.A career spanning nearly seven decadesUsha Nadkarni is among the few actors who have remained active in the entertainment industry for almost 70 years. She has worked across Marathi and Hindi cinema, television serials and theatre, earning admiration for portraying strong and memorable characters.Although she enjoys immense respect today, Usha has admitted in earlier interviews that there were phases when she accepted projects mainly for financial reasons. At times, she felt she did not receive the recognition she deserved, but she continued working because acting was not just her profession, it was her passion.Living alone since 1987Away from the camera, Usha has spent much of her life on her own. In a recent conversation with Rajshri Marathi, the veteran actor revealed that she has been living alone in Mumbai since 1987.She admitted that moving into a new building initially made her anxious and further added, "I'm used to it. I've been living alone since 1987. I'm not scared at all. I used to be scared when I first moved into my building. I would ask the guard to accompany me to my door because I was afraid somebody would attack me from behind. But I'm not scared anymore.”With her son settled abroad and all her siblings no longer alive, Usha has learned to embrace solitude. She also reflected on growing older alone, saying she occasionally wonders whether anyone would realise if something happened to her. Still, she insisted that she is not afraid of death, believing that no one can predict how life will end.The sacrifice that affected her relationship with her sonOne of the most emotional chapters of Usha's life has been her relationship with her son. In an earlier interview with Pinkvilla, she shared that her demanding theatre schedule meant she could not spend enough time raising him.Since her brother had a larger home, her son stayed there with Usha's mother, who eventually became the primary caregiver. The actor recalled that she visited him whenever work allowed, but there was never a fixed routine because Marathi theatre often required multiple performances in a single day.Looking back, Usha shared that her son once told her she had only given birth to him and that his grandmother was the one who truly raised him. The remark, though painful, reflected the sacrifices she had to make while building her acting career.Growing up in an abusive householdLong before she became a household name, Usha endured a difficult childhood. She has described her father, an Air Force officer, as a violent man who frequently beat her and her siblings.During an appearance on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa's podcast, Usha recalled, "If he found the newspaper to be crumpled or crooked in any way, he would lose his temper and tear it up. If he saw that our schoolbooks weren't kept in neat rows, he would tear them up in anger. My mother would tell him that he'd only have to buy new ones, so he shouldn't tear them."She also remembered how terrified all the children were of their father. According to Usha, whenever one sibling was being beaten, the others would run away in fear. One incident has stayed with her throughout her life. She recalled trying to stop her father while he was beating her brother, after which he allegedly attacked her with a koita, a machete-like farming tool. She injured her arm but still performed in a stage play the very next day despite the pain. Her dream of acting was not welcomed at homeBecoming an actor was another battle Usha had to fight. Since she feared her father's strict nature, she first shared her dream with her mother, hoping for encouragement.Instead, her mother opposed the idea and reportedly threw her belongings out of the house. Usha stayed with a friend for nearly a week before eventually returning home.Years later, while appearing on Sony TV's Tum Ho Naa – Ghar Ki Superstar, Usha reflected on that difficult period. She explained that her mother, a teacher, believed acting was not a suitable profession for a middle-class family, especially because of society's opinions. However, Usha said she chose to follow her heart instead of worrying about what others would say. She revealed that she first stepped onto the stage as a fourth-standard student and, decades later, continues to perform with the same enthusiasm.Usha Nadkarni's life has been defined by resilience. She overcame an abusive childhood, family opposition, financial struggles and years of living alone while continuing to pursue the profession she loved.Today, she remains one of television's most respected and admired actors.
