Panathinaikos was held to a 1-1 draw by Bulgaria’s CSKA 1948 in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round on Wednesday despite dominating possession and creating the better chances.

The Athens side took the lead in the 21st minute through Adriano Jagusic, but Georgi Rusev equalized for the visitors 10 minutes later.

Panathinaikos controlled much of the match and repeatedly threatened the Bulgarian side’s goal but was unable to capitalize on its superiority.

The hosts continued to press after the break but failed to find a winner, leaving the tie evenly poised ahead of the return leg.

The teams will meet in Sofia next week, with the winner advancing to the Conference League playoff round.
