Google has renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and is positioning the research and analysis product more closely within its Gemini ecosystem. The key functional upgrade is a secure cloud computer inside each notebook, which Google says enables code execution and deeper analysis. However, despite broad availability messaging, access is rolling out in stages rather than arriving simultaneously for every user, device, and subscription tier.
In its July 16, 2026 announcement, Google's official Gemini Notebook update said the secure cloud computer was available immediately to Google AI Ultra users and Google Workspace customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google also said web availability for Pro users would follow in the coming weeks. The change is therefore more than a branding exercise: it extends what a notebook can do with its source material while tying the experience more directly to Gemini.
What Gemini Notebook changes
The rebrand makes the product's relationship with Gemini explicit. NotebookLM had been Google's source-grounded notebook environment, while Gemini is the company's wider AI product family. Under the Gemini Notebook name, Google is connecting notebooks across services and creating a path toward broader discovery and use inside the Gemini ecosystem.
