Transport for London has issued Uber and tech partner Wayve with the first licences allowing them to offer autonomous rides on a commercial basis in the capital, although for now a human driver must be present.
The firms said they would offer their first trips later in the summer, initially for people who had expressed interest in the service, before a full public launch later this year.
TfL granted 15 private-hire vehicle licences to Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI-powered driving software, cameras and radar.
