GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic may reduce the risk of serious bone fractures in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a large study that challenges fears the blockbuster drugs could damage bone health.
Researchers found that patients starting GLP-1 medicines had a 21% lower risk of fragility fractures over three years than comparable patients prescribed DPP-4 medicines — another class of diabetes medicines.
People with type 2 diabetes face an elevated fracture risk from low-energy trauma — such as falling from standing height or lower — despite often having normal or higher bone density. That “may be due to lower bone strength, impaired bone microarchitecture, and accelerated bone loss,” the researchers said.
