Despite a blockbuster South African debut drawing over 100,000 fans, LIV Golf faces an uncertain future as financial troubles threaten to bring the controversial tour to an end. Picture: LIV Golf

While the official line points to an ongoing search for new investors and a potential format overhaul, LIV Golf looks increasingly like a sinking ship.

Alarm bells began ringing the moment Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing. Whatever your stance on the breakaway circuit's merits, LIV unquestionably brought a fresh format and a new audience to the game.

That appeal was on full display in March when the tour hosted its inaugural South African event. Despite premium ticket prices, the tournament drew over 100,000 fans across the practice rounds and four days of competition. For a debut on SA soil, that statistic alone proves the organisers were onto something special.

LIV Golf’s unique selling point has always been its ability to cater to non-purists. Outside the ropes, ticket holders enjoyed access to post-round concerts featuring top-tier artists. On the course, the team-based structure—though currently vulnerable to the tour's funding crunch—offered a broader, modern dynamic that departed from traditional stroke play.
