Shares of banks and other financial institutions rose as traders bet the sector would benefit from heightened volatility in stock and bond markets.

Even as stocks rallied on Tuesday, the CBOE Volatility Index, also known as the VIX, or "fear gauge," rose, too, said one veteran strategist.

"Clearly, the overnight wartime risk still exists," said JJ Kinahan, senior vice president at CBOE Global Markets.
