Centralized energy assets such as hydropower, coal- and gas-fired power stations, and power grid substations have long been targeted in modern warfare. In the Ukraine war, Russia has been pounding energy infrastructure for the last four years. Ukraine has responded with a push to build more flexible, decentralized capacity — from solar farms and gas peaking plants to battery systems and rooftop solar panels — to keep the lights on during the war.
