Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) said on Wednesday (Aug. 5) that the United States' decision, announced the previous day, to revoke the visa of Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Viotti was "an irresponsible and thoughtless act." He also praised Brazil's Foreign Ministry for blocking the entry of U.S. government representatives who were planning to travel to Brazil to question the country's electoral system, according to The Washington Post.Relations between the two countries have deteriorated in recent weeks. A State Department spokesperson said that Viotti's visa revocation would be reversed if Brazil granted agrément to Daniel Perez, the U.S. nominee to serve as ambassador in Brasília. The nomination did not follow standard diplomatic protocol, under which an ambassador's name is normally announced only after agrément has been granted.
Lula noted that Trump took a long time to appoint an ambassador to Brazil and later pressed for a swift response to his nominee. He also said he would not receive new foreign ambassadors until after the October elections.
