Larry Berg was formally introduced as the next MLS commissioner on Tuesday. Over the course of a 40-minute press conference, he spoke about his passion for soccer, his business bona fides and his optimism about the league’s growth.
“MLS has entered a new era,” he said. “The foundation is strong and the opportunity is extraordinary. … I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.”
Berg was officially named to the job earlier this week, following a monthslong process spearheaded by Columbus Crew owner Jimmy Haslam and LAFC co-owner Bennett Rosenthal. He’ll take the helm from Don Garber at the start of next year, with Garber serving as chairman through the end of 2027.
Here are six things that stood out from talking with MLS owners, Berg’s introductory press conference and a 10-minute private conversation with Berg, Garber, Rosenthal and Haslam.
