Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's desperate appeal for help as Patriot delays allow Russian troops to unleash another night of deadly horror on Kyiv's civilians11:52, 05 Aug 2026Ukrainian President Zelensky has appealed to allies urgently to supply better defences after Russia killed another 17 people in Kyiv and injured more than 50 overnight. The latest Kremlin missile and drone onslaught slammed into Kyiv and its surrounding region as Ukraine ’s air defences are left desperately exposed.‌It is believed they have used up their US-made Patriot missiles, the only weapons capable of downing Moscow’s ballistic weapons which are killing civilians. Last night’s attack was one of the most brutal Kremlin attacks of the year.‌Zelensky said: “It is crucial that our partners realise that delays in their delivery or a reluctance to provide anti-ballistic systems lead precisely to such horrific casualties and destruction. Partners who are not ready to help more actively with the supply of interceptors right now can help by imposing new sanctions.”‌The furious leader was trying to maintain a diplomatic posture against US President Donald Trump ’s stepping back from a promise of helping with Patriot production. Moscow’s latest attack focused on the capital and its surrounding region as more than 30 massive explosions rang out in Kyiv during the night.Even as the bombs and drones rained down on civilian targets, Ukraine attacked another major Russian Wildberries outlet with deep-strike drones. The latest attacks on the e-commerce outlet hit Wildberries in the Russian Tula region, amid accusations by Kyiv the company supplies the military.‌But the Russian attack on the capital set residential buildings, warehouses and industrial sites ablaze across the city and wider Kyiv region. It is also feared victims may still be trapped beneath wrecked buildings as rescuers fought to reach them and Ukraine braced for fresh attacks. The Patriot PAC-3 system is currently the only weapon in Ukraine’s arsenal capable of reliably intercepting Russia’s Iskander-M ballistic missiles as their trajectory is steep and fast.These Russian missiles carry warheads powerful enough to destroy large sections of apartment buildings. The horror being unleashed upon Ukraine’s civilians by Putin was ordered as his invasion shows signs of faltering, his troops unable to gain traction on the frontline. Zelensky recently revealed his troops have video evidence recorded of Russia losing 30,727 military personnel to drone strikes alone in July.‌Last month US President Donald Trump promised to help Ukraine further, saying: “We’ll give them the right to make Patriots. We’ll show them how to do it.”But several weeks later, Trump has appeared to retreat from that position saying that no agreement had been reached and transferring such technology was “a hard thing to give away.” He said: “We have not agreed to that. We’re talking about it, but it’s a hard thing to give away that kind of technology.”Article continues belowRussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops to step up attacks on Ukraine’s civilians. On August 1 a major Russian ballistic missile attack killed nine people and injured more than 30, including four teenagers. The strike damaged 13 apartment buildings, four private homes, administrative and commercial buildings, a film studio, a shop, and dozens of vehicles.Two days earlier, on July 30 another Russian missile attack killed one person and injured two in Kyiv, while five others were wounded in Kyiv region. Separate strikes that day also hit Lviv and the town of Radushne in Dnipropetrovsk region, where five people, including two children, were killed.
