From 10kg and unable to walk to a second chance: The remarkable story of a little survivor.

A seven-year-old girl who was allegedly locked in a room, starved and left to die has made an extraordinary recovery after receiving care at the Zanethemba Charity Foundation's Baby Haven in Gqeberha.

Known only as "Ella" to protect her identity, the little girl arrived at the temporary safe care facility severely malnourished and weighing just 10kg.

According to the foundation, the abuse she endured had robbed her of the ability to walk and speak, while the trauma left her with complex feeding and behavioural challenges.

"Ella was a normal functioning little girl until she was locked in a room, starved and left to die," the foundation said.
