According to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), the chargers will be installed across the city’s five boroughs over the next three years. The rollout will prioritise densely populated neighbourhoods with limited off-street parking and large numbers of taxi and ride-hailing drivers.
The expansion forms part of the PlugNYC charging network and will increase the number of public curbside Level 2 charging points from 88 to nearly 700.
Each charging site will feature at least two charger posts with two charging points each, providing four charging points per location. Where possible, the installations will also include electrical connections for future e-mobility applications such as public e-bike charging, electrified bike-sharing docks, secure bicycle parking with charging facilities or cargo bike charging for urban logistics hubs.
The first phase will cover Soundview and Unionport in the Bronx; Rego Park, Forest Hills and Far Rockaway in Queens; Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn; the Upper West Side and Washington Heights in Manhattan; and Stapleton on Staten Island. The city also intends to improve charging access in low- and moderate-income communities that have attracted little private-sector investment.
