Lithuania has no evidence that Russia deliberately targeted its embassy in Kyiv during missile strikes last week that damaged the diplomatic mission, Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said.
“No, we do not have such information,” Budrys said in an interview with the business daily Verslo žinios published Wednesday.
“Based on what we know at this point, we believe the damage was not accidental in the sense that the missiles struck very close to our premises, but we do not believe the embassy itself was the intended target,” he said.
In earlier comments to LRT TV about the incident, Budrys had speculated that the possibility of Russia targeting the Lithuanian embassy deliberately “cannot be ruled out, although we cannot confirm it at this stage”.
In the Verslo žinios interview, Budrys said there were no apparent military or other strategic targets near the embassy, although a thermal power plant about 1.5 kilometres away has been repeatedly targeted by Russian forces.
