A video circulating on social media shows the moments surrounding a fatal incident involving an eThekwini Municipality water tanker in Adams Mission. Police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
The death of a 39-year-old man in Umbumbulu, who was run over by a water tanker, has reignited anger over using these vehicles to deliver water to communities.
Several organisations have criticised this practice following the death of Celani Zungu on Monday, saying communities should not have to rely on water tankers for their water supply.
Ratepayers and political parties have expressed concerns about the potential abuse of the system for profiteering. The use of water tankers is common in almost every municipality in KwaZulu-Natal where water supply is inconsistent water supply.
The reliance on water tankers has led to allegations that municipal infrastructure is being sabotaged by a "water mafia" to force municipalities to procure water tankers.
