We’re seeing an increasing number of electric and hybrid vehicles on our roads, but how popular have they become compared with traditional petrol and diesel models?
New data released by Naamsa this week sheds some light on “New Energy Vehicles” (NEVs) and the share of the sales market they command in 2026. It also shows that hybrid vehicles remain significantly more popular than fully electric vehicles (EVs).
According to Naamsa, a total of 13,193 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) were sold in South Africa between January and June 2026, representing 4.1% of the total new vehicle market.
Just over half of NEV sales were conventional hybrid vehicles, with 6,667 units sold during the first half of the year, giving them a 50.5% share of the NEV market.
