Apple just lobbed what might be the most consequential lawsuit in the AI hardware wars directly at OpenAI’s front door. The company filed suit in Northern California federal court on July 10, accusing OpenAI of stealing trade secrets related to hardware designs and manufacturing processes, and it wants a judge to shut the whole thing down immediately.
The 41-page complaint doesn’t pull punches. Apple alleges that OpenAI didn’t just passively benefit from hiring experienced engineers. It claims the company actively coached former Apple employees on how to bypass security protocols to extract sensitive information.
The scale of the alleged operation
This isn’t a case about one rogue employee walking out with a thumb drive. Apple says more than 400 of its former employees now work at OpenAI, and the complaint names two specific ex-employees as defendants alongside the AI company itself.
The lawsuit alleges a calculated, coordinated effort to siphon proprietary information about Apple’s hardware designs and manufacturing techniques. Apple’s complaint includes what it describes as internal communications that point to a broader culture of security evasion at OpenAI.
