Bulgarian authorities have dismantled a high-tech laboratory producing fentanyl during a specialized operation in Sofia, dealing what investigators believe is a major blow to the illegal distribution of the highly dangerous synthetic drug.
According to initial information, the facility was capable of producing between 6 and 10 kilograms of fentanyl per day and is believed to have supplied a large part, if not all, of the country. The operation was carried out by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) under heightened security measures because of the hazardous chemical fumes generated during production.
Two people identified by investigators as the laboratory's main producers were arrested at the scene. Authorities said additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues, with further criminal charges also pending.
The laboratory, located in Sofia's Fakulteta district, was equipped with sophisticated technology designed for large-scale production. Because of the dangerous chemicals involved, investigators entered the site wearing specialized protective equipment, while ambulances and emergency response teams remained on standby throughout the operation.
