Focus Mamelodi Community NGO launched an anti-abuse campaign aimed at breaking the silence around the abuse of women and children, highlighting the role that silence and lack of intervention can play in perpetuating gender-based violence and child abuse.
The campaign, held in late 2025 at Ikageng Community Hall under the theme “To Raise Awareness and Educate Individuals in Various Forms of Abuse”, brought together community members to discuss the impact of abuse and the importance of speaking out.
Survivor of gender-based violence Fuma Koti shared her experience, revealing that she was raped as a child and that her family chose to discuss the matter with neighbours rather than involving the police. Years later, her daughter also became a victim, which Koti believes highlights the generational impact of unaddressed trauma.
“I was raped three times, and when I went to my parents, they never came back to me. Instead, they spoke about it with the neighbor. There was no police, no counselling, and no justice. Later, my daughter was also raped. It was then I realised this was not just an incident, it was a generational curse,” Koti said.
