Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated on Tuesday a new drinking water project executed at a cost of ₹29.51 crore for benefiting the residents of Vickramasingapuram municipality.After the Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme from Chennai through videoconference, District Collector Anand Mohan lighted the traditional lamp at the Papanasam pumping station and inspected the water purification unit, overhead tanks and the drinking water distribution infrastructure created as part of this scheme.As the Vickramasingpuram municipality is growing rapidly, infrastructure created under the existing 56-year-old drinking water scheme cannot meet the actual demand for drinking water. Hence, additional infrastructures like drinking water purification unit with 4 MLD capacity, drinking water distribution pipes for 81.74 km, main feeder drinking water pipes for 6.25 km and 3 overhead tanks have been created for giving drinking water to more number of houses.This project will now benefit 48,399 people living in 21 wards of Vickramasingapuram Municipality. Even though 12,890 houses of this urban civic body have been given drinking water connection, the new scheme will enable the municipality to give drinking water connection to another 25,000 houses.“Each resident will get 135 litres of purified water a day now,” said Mr. Anand Mohan.District Revenue Officer S.
