A Cape Town couple have been fined a combined R80,000 after being convicted of several wildlife offences involving the illegal possession, keeping and transportation of 95 reptiles.
Zirkie Bernardus Jansen and his wife, Valerie Gayle Simpson-Jansen, from Kirstenhof, were sentenced in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on July 30, 2026.
They were each ordered to pay a fine of R40,000 or serve 18 months in prison after being convicted on seven counts under the Nature Conservation Ordinance 19 of 1974.
The case stemmed from offences committed in March 2022, when the couple were found to have unlawfully kept and transported 95 reptile specimens without the required permits and authorisations.
