Early diagnosis can make a significant difference in the lives of children with developmental disorders. But for many Filipino families, accessing specialists who can provide that care remains an overwhelming challenge.

Dr. Amado Parawan, a pediatrician based in Cagayan de Oro City, said children with developmental delays need immediate intervention to prevent long-term effects on their growth, learning and overall well-being.

“Developmental delays among children affect the progression of their potential, as well as their well-being,” Parawan told the Inquirer.

Parawan said many parents become distressed after noticing signs that something may be different in their child’s neurodevelopment but receive little guidance on where to seek help.

“[They become] helpless not knowing what to do,” he said.
