Major motorway closed after road workers find suspected human remains

A major motorway will be closed for the majority of the day after suspected human remains were found near a bridge. Road workers made the discovery between junctions three and four of the M67 in Tameside, Greater Manchester, on Monday night. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called shortly after 11pm and began a probe to 'understand the circumstances behind the incident'. A police presence has remained at the scene throughout Tuesday morning.The motorway, situated east of Manchester, was initially closed in both directions but the westbound carriageway opened earlier this morning.The route eastbound between Hyde and Hattersley will remain shut for 'most of the day' as detectives carry out inquiries. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area and National Highways has set up a diversion along the A627 and A57 roads. 'If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time,' a statement read. The M67 in Tameside, Greater Manchester, was shut after the discovery of humans remains near a bridge between junctions 3 and 4A spokesperson from GMP said: 'Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday August 3, 2026, by road workers, who made the discovery close to a bridge between junctions three and four. 'We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident.'The road will be closed between junctions three and four while detectives carry out their investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and we will provide updates when we have them.'A National Highways statement read: 'The M67 in Greater Manchester is closed eastbound between J3 (Hyde) and J4 (Hattersley) due to a Greater Manchester Police led incident which occurred yesterday evening. 'The road was closed in both directions, at 9am police confirmed the westbound carriageway has reopened.'Police continue to carry out detailed investigations at the scene to establish the circumstances of the incident. There is currently no estimated time for reopening of the eastbound carriageway.'
