Under Secretary Colby met with Germany, the UK, Italy and Romania in late July
The Pentagon held a series of consultations with NATO officials and European allies, including Germany, the UK, Italy and Romania, as part of its ongoing Europe Posture Review, Under Secretary Elbridge Colby revealed on Monday.
In a series of posts on X, Colby said the review was being conducted through “regular and detailed consultations” with allies and partners, drawing on both US expertise and allied perspectives. The discussions focused on “incentivising and enabling allies to take primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defence” as part of his vision for “NATO 3.0”.
As previously mentioned in FIREPOWER, Washington launched the Europe Posture Review after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced at the NATO ministerial summit in June that the US would reassess its force posture on the continent.
Germany featured prominently in the consultations. During a 23 July meeting with Germany’s Chief of Defence and Political Director, Colby praised Berlin’s new military strategy and its commitment to meet NATO’s 5% defence spending pledge agreed at the Hague summit. He said it would “dramatically accelerate NATO 3.0” and position Germany as “a key leader of Europe’s conventional defence”.
