Since AI burst into the workplace, employee anxiety has been impossible to ignore. That anxiety is affecting productivity, engagement, confidence, and job satisfaction. AI Has Been A Shock To The SystemIt seemed to come out of nowhere and be all-consuming shortly after it launched. When something so massive mysteriously arrives almost overnight, it automatically creates anxiety. For most of us, the AI revolution is the biggest, fastest workplace change of our careers. By comparison, the internet took five to seven years to reach widespread business saturation. But with AI, most of us started hearing about it in early 2023, and within two months it surpassed 100 million monthly users, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Organizations quickly began experimenting with AI across nearly every business function. The speed and scope of the AI revolution is creating a lot of anxiety.Uncertainty Is More Stressful than Bad News Humans tolerate change much better than ambiguity. There’s lots of confusion in companies about what’s expected from employees. Many professionals are experimenting with every AI tool they can find simply because they don't want to fall behind. People are asking:Will my job change? What skills should I learn? Will AI make me less valuable? In addition, employees no longer know what outstanding performance looks like. For years, success meant being the person with the answers. Today AI can produce many of those answers instantly. Employees are wondering: What am I actually being evaluated on now?Media Coverage Focused on AI Replacing Most Knowledge WorkersMedia attention exploded in January and February 2023, and the initial news coverage sent a clear message: You will be replaced. Then, coverage increased after Microsoft integrated ChatGPT into Bing and Google announced Bard. From that point onward, there was a steady stream of headlines about job displacement, misinformation, hallucinations, and existential AI risk. Recently, though, AI leaders and economists have changed their minds about the scope of the disruption. But the fear persists.AI Stole Many Professionals’ Career IdentityLeadership advisor Tony Martignetti argues that today's workplace crisis isn't burnout. It's identity loss. In his article in Fast Company, he says that despite employees still showing up, attending meetings, and completing their assignments, many of them have disconnected from their work. Martignetti says employees haven't just stopped giving extra effort. They've stopped bringing themselves to work. Many professionals built their identity around being the expert, the fastest writer, the most insightful analyst. But now, AI performs those tasks. The Pace of AI Feels ExhaustingThe inclusion of AI into the workplace is not really one change. It’s an ongoing series of activities: another AI modelanother announcementanother toolanother predictionanother headlineEmployees don't feel behind because they're learning slowly. They feel behind because the finish line keeps moving. The learning curve seems endless and unmanageable.AI Is Sparking a Fear of Becoming ObsoleteThis fear is different from job loss. Many professionals aren't worried about unemployment as much as they're worried about becoming irrelevant. No one wants to become the reluctant relic. Becoming obsolete is emotionally different from losing your job. People are thinking: I still have my job, but am I being marked down? Comparison CultureAnother growing issue is the fear of falling behind peers. Look at your LinkedIn feed or other social media. There are endless posts like:I saved 20 hours this weekI automated my workflowI’m using 6 AI agentsNow everyone thinks they're behind. AI is creating the same comparison trap that social media created years ago. With AI becoming broader every day, trying to master everything is a losing strategy.AI Is Exposing, Not Creating, The Future Of WorkOne of the biggest misconceptions is that AI is creating an entirely new workplace. In reality, the workplace was already rewarding adaptability, creativity, collaboration, learning agility, and influence. AI has accelerated that trend. It’s making those capabilities significantly more important. That means the path forward isn't mysterious. The skills that make people successful today are becoming even more valuable. This is part of what I call The Great Human Premium, a phenomenon that describes how human value in organizations is changing. Employee mindsets need to change as well. What Employees Can Do To Maximize AI And Increase Their Success And EngagementThe encouraging news is that none of these fears is permanent. The professionals who are thriving aren't ignoring AI. They're approaching it differently.Stop Thinking Replacement. Start Thinking PartnershipToday, even the leaders of the biggest AI organizations admit that despite being a truly transformative innovation, AI will replace a much smaller number of jobs. The highest performers won't compete with AI, they’ll partner with it. Partnering with AI is one of six career advancement actions that will AI-proof your career. The mindset to adopt is: I am becoming AI-augmented. That mindset shift replaces fear with possibility.Become AI CuriousCuriosity is much healthier than fear. Instead of asking, "Will AI replace me?" Ask "How can I use AI to increase my performance and confidence?" That's a huge shift in thinking. Focus on learning one use case each week. You don’t need to master AI, you just need momentum. These small wins will gradually replace fear with confidence.Invest Not Only in AI, But in Becoming More HumanThe biggest career mistake isn't failing to learn AI. It's neglecting the human skills AI makes even more valuable. Let AI focus on creating content, analyzing data, and automating routine functions. Commit to expanding human skills that are more valuable in the AI era:leadershipcommunicationjudgmentinfluencerelationship buildingtrustemotional intelligencecreativitycoachingBecome the AI ChampionDon't wait for direction. Jump in. Volunteer to test tools, share prompts, and teach coworkers. Your visibility will increase dramatically, and you’ll build the personal brand attributes of innovative, adaptable, collaborative, and forward-thinking. When you commit to becoming an AI champion, the way you feel about AI will change. Redefine Your Professional Identity And How You Measure ImpactMaybe you’ve been identifying as the spreadsheet expert or the report writer. Evolve that identity to include skills that drive impact. Become the person who helps leaders make better decisions or brings people together to solve difficult problems. AI is changing what organizations value, but it isn't eliminating human value. Quite the opposite. As routine work becomes easier to automate, uniquely human capabilities become more valuable. The professionals who thrive won't be the ones who know the most about AI. They'll be the ones who know how to combine AI's capabilities with the skills that only people can provide.William Arruda is a keynote speaker, bestselling author, and personal branding pioneer.
