ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs rookie defensive tackle Peter Woods was dominant during one-on-one drills Monday, the first day of padded practices in this year’s training camp.Specifically, Woods — the Chiefs’ 29th pick in April’s draft — showed off his swift feet and quick hands while working against Chiefs backup offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad; Woods won a pair of one-on-one reps soundly before screaming out his satisfaction toward the sky.To his credit, Woods said he’d been looking forward to this. When talking to reporters on July 25 — when camp had opened only for quarterbacks and rookies — Woods was asked about his excitement for the team’s first padded practice.“It’s been almost a year since I’ve been able to put the pads on and hit somebody,” Woods said with a smile. “So that first contact is going to be like a kid in a candy store.”What we learned from seeing Patrick Mahomes on the field againJesse NewellWoods made the most of his time Monday to impress coaches, appearing to be on a fast track toward playing time on the interior of the Chiefs’ D-line.“He’s got a ways to go, but you sure like the tools and the effort and how smart he is,” coach Andy Reid said Monday. “I appreciate that.”Right guard Trey Smith, who has frequently gone against Woods in recent months, described him Monday as a “full package-type guy,” saying Woods had the combination of hand utilization, speed and power that made him a high-ceiling talent.“He’s young, and he’s figuring out the game. But he has a willingness to learn, and I really, really enjoyed the way he stepped into this program, this organization, and how he’s trying to turn himself into a great player,” Smith said. “But definitely has an outstanding future ahead of him.”Woods was considered a potential top-five draft pick at this time last year (he was even No. 1 for The Athletic’s Dane Brugler on Aug. 21, 2025), but he slipped down boards after he wasn’t as productive statistically during his final year at Clemson. Woods had a new defensive coordinator last season, and the Tigers seemed to alter their plans frequently regarding how to use Woods. After meeting with Chiefs coaches this offseason, Woods says he plans to play somewhere between 308 and 313 pounds this season, saying he believed he’d be most effective in that range.“Speed, quickness, acceleration. Mismatch,” he said of what he expected while playing around 308. “So I’m really excited.”Woods said he spent the offseason working on being more detail-oriented than he was in college. He knew he was about to go against some of the best offensive linemen in the world, so he believed he needed to limit mistakes to give himself the best chance at success. He hoped, by doing that, he would put himself in position to make a good impression when the padded practices started Monday.“It’ll be my first league contact,” Woods said in late July, “so I’m going to try to make it my best one ever.”Needless to say, Woods didn’t disappoint in the contact setting, flashing the type of potential that could help him become an early contributor.“I like what I’ve seen,” Reid said. “He’s an explosive kid.”Chiefs WRs miss practiceReid gave updates on receivers Cyrus Allen and Xavier Worthy, who both missed Monday’s workout.Worthy has a shoulder sprain, according to Reid, and is “day-to-day; we’ll just see where it goes.” Worthy injured his shoulder after he made a deep catch in Saturday’s practice before cornerback Kader Kohou rolled over the top of him.The Chiefs have been cautious with Worthy’s shoulder this offseason. The 2024 first-round pick injured it during Week 1 last season in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce, then had surgery in the winter to repair his torn labrum. Because of that, Worthy participated in OTAs and mandatory minicamp while wearing a yellow no-contact jersey.Reid said Allen, meanwhile, has a bone bruise on his shin, saying it’ll “be a day or two there” before the receiver returns to practice.“They’ve got to get the swelling out of there,” Reid said.Allen, a 2026 fifth-round pick who has been an early camp standout, hurt himself on a collision during a special teams drill in Saturday’s practice.
